**Lots of late scratches today :-/

Total investment: $558

Those are our tickets. Below are the thoughts behind them, including an extra value horse in each race where we’re only using two. Those extras aren’t on our tickets, but they’re there if you want more coverage—or ammunition afterward.

Race-by-Race Commentary

Race 1 — Using 7, 8, 9Trouble Time (#8) brings the strongest recent figures of our three, including an 84 last out and an 80 three-race average. L Rankin (#7) fits on his better efforts, while Heartily (#9) supplies the early speed and the need for considerable improvement late. We’re betting he can do something useful with that head start. Preferably keep it.

Race 2 — Using 2, 10, 12Sailor’s Dream (#12) has just one start behind her and showed early speed, making her an interesting runner with room to improve. Valentine Eve (#10) has previously reached a 59 figure but needs to rebound from her latest. Southern Way (#2) requires an even larger turnaround, with Gaffalione taking the mount. Two-year-old maiden claimers: where the phrase “she can’t possibly run that badly again” occasionally gets an immediate answer.

Race 3 — Using 7, 8Dancin for Gold (#7) comes off a 101 and brings enough early pace to make his presence felt. Swirvin (#8) needs a rebound, but his older figures and the Irad Ortiz Jr.–Saffie Joseph Jr. combination keep him on our ticket. One has the recent evidence; the other has us explaining why we ignored the recent evidence.

💣 Extra value look: King Apollo (#3), 8-1 morning line. His last-out 100 and three-race average of 96 put him squarely alongside Dancin for Gold on figures. That latest effort came against $6,250 claimers, so the competition gets tougher here, but he’s a credible third horse if his price holds. An appealing alternative for anyone less interested in Swirvin’s rehabilitation program.

Race 4 — Using 1, 2, 3, 5, 9Sucker for Looks (#9) brings a 78 debut figure, the strongest last-out number among our selections. Delightful Diva (#5) and Candy Pancakes (#3) are close enough on figures, with Candy Pancakes getting Irad for Brad Cox. Toco Dancer (#1) showed substantial early pace in her debut, while Speedbird (#2) has room to move forward from her first start. Five runners because young fillies learning to race around two turns rarely consult our spreadsheet.

Race 5 — Using 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10Classic Time (#5) and Ship Ship Hooray (#10) arrive off strong 103 and 101 figures. Creole Chrome (#3) comes off a career-best 98, while Jefferson Street (#2) has back numbers that fit. Camp Hale (#1) supplies a competitive recent average, and Rockies Balboa (#8) gets Prat while trying to rediscover his better form. Six horses deep—we’ve reached the portion of the ticket where conviction starts charging by the head.

Race 6 — Using 1, 3, 11, 12The late Pick 5 begins with a juvenile maiden race, so keep the confidence at a socially acceptable level. Capitola (#11) brings Irad and Cox, Fair Chase (#12) gets Gaffalione for Brendan Walsh, Decimation (#3) has Saez for Asmussen, and Brazen Caine (#1) gets Jose Ortiz. There’s appealing pedigree and connection strength throughout this group. Unfortunately, none of the humans is allowed to carry the horse the final furlong.

Race 7 — Using 1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 12The Perryville gives us Roscoe’s Brother (#4) off a towering 116 and Deep Flame (#12) off a 111. Those are serious credentials. Obliteration (#11) has competitive back figures and Prat aboard, while Doublecents (#10) enters off a career-best 102. Trouble Calling (#2) offers a steady recent average, and Solitude Dude (#1) needs to recover his better form. Six runners in a stakes sprint. We’ve apparently confused narrowing it down with taking attendance.

Race 8 — Using 1, 3, 8, 10Bojaca Blessing (#10) comes off a field-best 99, while Hear the Queen (#3) brings a strong 98 three-race average for Cox and Irad. Caviar Breakfast (#1) and She’s Lookin Lucky (#8) both earned 93s last out and provide legitimate alternatives. Caviar Breakfast sounds expensive, but at this point we’d happily settle for a sandwich and a live ticket.

Race 9 — Using 8, 9, 11In the Raven Run, Mashallah (#9) brings the strongest recent figures of our trio, including a 104 last out and a 100 average. Conceit (#8) has been consistently competitive and gets Irad for Cox, while Movie Night (#11) comes off a career-best 101 with Prat riding for Will Walden. Three fillies with convincing recent efforts. We’re asking them to settle this without introducing us to a fourth.

Race 10 — Using 1, 11Shirley Ann (#11) brings a last-out 100 and a 95 three-race average, both best in this field. Mechaya (#1) comes off a 95 and gives us another runner with competitive recent form. That’s our two-horse finish: one outside, one inside, and us somewhere in the middle experiencing elevated blood pressure.

💣 Extra bomb: Cactus Cairo (#2), 30-1 morning line. Her last three figures average 89, she earned a 92 last out, and her lifetime best is 97. Those numbers make her worth a closer look at anything resembling that morning-line price. She still has to prove she can deliver against this field, but she’s a plausible third option for readers looking to finish with a price. At 30-1, we can tolerate a few thorns.
