Four tracks. Eight suspects. Nobody here for the participation trophy.

Odds listed are morning lines; the minimum prices are what we’d want before making a win bet. A horse can be interesting at 15-1 and considerably less charming at 4-1.

KEENELAND

đź’Ł Race 10 #2 CACTUS CAIRO Morning line: 30-1 | Want: 15-1 or better - SCRATCHED

Here’s our biggest swing. In her turf debut at Churchill, she came from well back to finish sixth, beaten only 3¾ lengths, earning a 92. Shirley Ann and Mechaya finished ahead of her that day, so she has ground to make up but with only three lifetime starts, improvement is a reasonable possibility. Her debut win on synthetic earned a 97. If the leaders make this sprint lively, she could have something to run at late. At anything resembling 30-1, we’re interested. Apparently the cactus didn’t receive the invitation, but she’s coming anyway.

đź’Ł Race 3 #3 KING APOLLO Morning line: 8-1 | Want: 8-1 or better - NOT TODAY

His latest 100 figure and 96 three-race average compare favorably with this field. The catch: that last win came against $6,250 claimers at Los Alamitos, and matching a number doesn’t automatically mean matching the competition. Still, this veteran has older allowance form and enough ability to warrant consideration at a price. We’re asking the king to reclaim his throne after a brief stint managing the discount counter.

đź’Ł Race 5 #8 ROCKIES BALBOAMorning line: 10-1 | Want: 10-1 or better BOOM!

His last two starts came in graded stakes, including a turf experiment. Before those, he won a Churchill allowance on a wet dirt track with a 97 figure. Now he returns from a freshening, gets Prat, and faces allowance company again. He needs improvement to beat the strongest recent numbers here, and his best effort came with moisture in the track. But there’s a plausible rebound case beneath those ugly running lines. Rocky has taken a few punches; we’re betting there might still be a round left.

Paid: $18.40 WIN | $9.04 PLACE | $6.04 SHOW

We said Rocky might still have a round left. Turns out he brought the whole damn fight. Back to allowance company, Prat in the saddle, and those ugly running lines suddenly looked a lot prettier at the cashier’s window.

Did we want 10-1? Yep. Will we complain about $18.40? Only if the cashier pays us in quarters.

BELMONT

đź’Ł Race 8 #2 BOURBON SERENGETIMorning line: 15-1 | Want: 10-1 or better - NOPE

She won by five at Saratoga two starts back, then finished second over this track and mile distance just eight days ago. That latest effort earned an 80, so she still needs to improve against the stronger figure horses. But she arrives with useful recent dirt-route form and enough tactical speed to stay involved. The quick turnaround is the question. At double-digit odds, we’ll consider a mare who’s actually been doing her job. Some of the others are still forwarding our calls to voicemail.

đź’Ł Race 4 #3 GREYJOYMorning line: 8-1 | Want: 8-1 or better - SCRATCHED

She won a restricted stakes at Saratoga in August, then disappointed in an allowance last time. Before that stakes win, she was narrowly beaten at today’s mile-and-a-sixteenth distance. Her figures leave her needing improvement, but the recent win and proven route competitiveness give us more than blind hope. Castellano takes over, and we’re looking for a return to her better tactical effort. One bad afternoon doesn’t erase the résumé although it does help with the price.

GULFSTREAM

đź’Ł Race 2 #7 ACTIVITYMorning line: 8-1 | Want: 8-1 or better - BOOM!

Two starts ago, he led into the stretch in a five-furlong turf maiden claimer before fading to fourth, behind today’s rival Unpredictable. He then finished third on synthetic. Returning to the short turf trip gives him a chance to make his speed count, though other early runners could complicate that plan. He’s a ten-start maiden, so we’re demanding a price. Activity has spent enough time looking busy; today we’d like a completed assignment.

đź’Ł ANOTHER BOMB DETONATED!

Race 2 — #7 ACTIVITY 💰Paid: $19.60 WIN | $9.20 PLACE | $3.80 SHOW

We said Activity had spent enough time looking busy and needed to complete an assignment. Apparently, he read the performance review.

Ten-start maiden? Former problem. Today he finally clocked in, did the work, and sent us home with $19.60.

Two bombs cashed. HR has canceled our disciplinary meeting. đź’Łđź’Ł

đź’Ł Race 10 #5 ZIRZOPMorning line: 8-1 | Want: 8-1 or better - SCRATCHED

He comes off a maiden win on synthetic after finishing third in a turf route despite trouble at the start. That gives him a plausible improving profile, with Gonzalez retaining the ride. The assignment gets tougher against winners, and his figures need to rise, but there’s room for a lightly raced three-year-old to progress. We’re buying the possibility of another step forward. Preferably before everyone else notices and ruins the price.

SANTA ANITA

đź’Ł Race 6 #7 BREAKAWAY BABE Morning line: 8-1 | Want: 8-1 or better - Still Runnin :-/

She won her debut, then faced a stakes field and an allowance field, showing speed before weakening in both. Today’s starter optional claiming company offers a more manageable assignment, and Kyle Frey aboard for her debut win returns. Her recent figures are below the leading contenders, so this requires a rebound. But class relief and a rider reunion give that rebound a plausible explanation. She’s been punching above her weight; perhaps this time she gets to throw the furniture.
