Belmont Race 5 — Late Pick 4, Leg 1

Using: 1, 2, 7, 9

#1 Ancient World gets class relief for Linda Rice and should land a stalking trip behind the early argument. Yes, we’re using the favorite. We question chalk; we don’t file a restraining order against it. #2 Tenebris offers tactical versatility and consistency, occasionally we let someone with a steady employment history onto the ticket. #7 Apollo Code is the closer we want if Bootleg Runner and Graywing turn the opening fractions into a personal dispute. He gets class relief too, and a pace fight could give him something to work with late. #9 He’s Got This brings Castellano and a habit of making up ground. We appreciate the confidence in the name, although we’ll require confirmation at the wire.

Belmont Race 6 — Late Pick 4, Leg 2

Using: 3, 7

Two-year-old maiden claimers going a mile and a sixteenth on grass. Naturally, this is where we’ve decided to exercise financial restraint. #3 Epic Prayer gets a softer assignment after his debut, with Flavien Prat aboard and the tactical position to get first run. We’d prefer an actual move turning for home, but the prayer option remains available. #7 Motorcycle Cop gives us the late threat for Rob Atras and Manny Franco. If the leaders get careless, we’re hoping he pulls them over somewhere inside the final furlong. Just two on the ticket here, get us through this leg and we’ll start sitting up straighter

Belmont Race 7 — Late Pick 4, Leg 3

Using: 1, 4, 5, 6

#4 Tuning In brings the stakes experience and class relief for James Bond. He’s the obvious one, but we’re giving him backup, apparently we have trust issues even with a Bond operation. #1 Max Money has won two of his last four and brings tactical speed from the rail. Save ground, find room, and please live up to the name. #5 Calling Card arrives with two wins in his last three for Linda Rice and Manny Franco; the company gets tougher, but sharp form earns him a seat at our table. #6 Probability has won three of his last six, which is a persuasive response to anyone dismissing him as a supporting character. He needs to handle the stronger field, but we’re keeping him on the ticket. Four deep here.

Belmont Race 8 — Late Pick 4, Leg 4

Using: 1, 3, 9, 10

If we’re still alive, this is where we stop answering texts. #1 Avalon Beach gets easier company for Mike Maker and has the tactical style to stay within striking distance. #3 Sparky’s Delight tries turf for the first time against softer company we’re paying for the possibility that she’s been applying for the wrong job. #9 R Kan’t Miss brings the speed and could get dangerous if allowed to dictate terms. We admire the name, although our legal department refuses to endorse it. #10 Southern Kiss gives us the late-running option for Mark Casse if the speed starts asking how much farther. Four in the finale: one to stalk, one to improve, one to steal it, and one to come collecting late. Preferably while we’re still holding a relevant ticket.

Complete Late Pick 4 — Races 5–8

1,2,7,9 / 3,7 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,3,9,10

128 combinations — $64 at 50¢, or $128 at $1.

That’s our late Pick 4, four races between us and either a victory speech or a quiet ride home.

The #2 kicked us out in leg three of Belmont’s late Pick 4, We made it just far enough to get interested. Looking back I really see no reason I should have would have included the #2 - so that dude must have eaten his wheaties this morning and was feeling beyond himself today :-) It happens!
